Metallica - The Call Of Ktulu (When Hell Freezes Over) Check out my profile for all the other songs:) The Call of Ktulu is the title of an instrumental composition by the metal band Metallica, released on their second studio album, Ride the Lightning in 1984. It was inspired by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, particularly The Call of Cthulhu. The Call of Ktulu was Metallica's second recorded instrumental, and first in which the entire band played together. This is one of the few Metallica songs to have been largely written by lead guitarist Dave Mustaine and was originally entitled "When Hell Freezes Over." Late bassist Cliff Burton was a huge Lovecraft fan and it is likely he was responsible for the title change. This goes some way toward explaining why the main arpeggios in this song are played note for note as chords in the Megadeth song, "Hangar 18". It was also used in the Megadeth song "When" from their album The World Needs A Hero. The song is also notable for being the longest Metallica song as of the release of Ride the Lightning, with a length of nearly nine minutes (8:53 to be exact), and still remains their fourth longest studio recording (discounting the cover songs "Mercyful Fate" and "Tuesday's Gone" from the cover album Garage Inc.). The song was re-arranged by Michael Kamen for Metallica's 1999 S&M project and won a Grammy for the best rock instrumental performance. Trivia * An uncredited MIDI soundalike version appeared in the 1993 computer game Doom on Episode 2, Map 2. * The song is also spelt Ktulu due to the legend in Lovecraft's stories which say Cthulhu (the monster) is summoned when pronouncing/spelling its name correctly

Who's arguing? But if you're gonna blame Lars & James for the crap, you also need to give them some credit for the tons of brilliant songs they've written - by themselves or with the others. Of course I shouldn't care, as I bet neither do they, but this "first it was Dave, then Cliff, then, er, Bob Rock" stuff is getting a bit old! And Mustaine deserves credit for the "intro" (or the "main theme") of this song, but this was a group effort.
  12. Kaelynn Says:
idk risk or .45 are bad but we cant even talk about crappy cds aka st anger lol.
  13. SHUKURA Says:
so... it's colled COK because of the Call of Cthulu story by HP Lovecraft (read it!) Dave Mustaine has written the intro (I do not need to explain the difference between an intro and a whole song..right?) Cliff and Dave were very inspirational in Metallica and two great musicians. Metallica and Megadeth are 2 great bands. metallica definetely more influential and able to lead during 80' and 90'. both of them have done crap records as everyband does. Stop bitchin' around and let's enjoy!
  14. Orvin Says:
I have never heard of this song. AND THIS IS MY FAV BAND EVER!
  15. MACA'BHIADHTAICHE Says:
Yeah, Hammet and Cliff were the technique, Hetfield and Lars were the brains. Together, mixed with a little bit of alcohol, made 5 great albums.
  16. Bainbridge Says:
I think thats the name of a book.
  17. Niall Says:
great song. one of the best I have ever heard. why does it called "call of ktulu"?
  18. SEDGELEY Says:
P.S you didnt sound aggressive or any thing but, I always and my co-respondent's with "Fuck off with the metalica shit already!".............
  19. MEZAJ Says:
your 21 year's old......you wernt even there, your just happy following along. What if, you Read that ,your band created puppets from "old jam session's" with dave. (copywrite in place ,they could lable it W/E)... cliff was there last true "Musican" not Hard to beleave ....Dave !
  20. Aeldra Says:
Have you heard Megadeth's Risk or that MD.45 record? Aren't they crap? Even Death Magnetic is way better than those. Cliff Burton was NEVER the main songwriter in the band. He was easily the most advanced musician of them all, and they used his (as well as Hammett's) ideas/riffs on quite a few Metallica tracks (especially on RTL). But Hetfield & Ulrich have always been Metallica's de facto songwriters, even when Burton was in the band. That is a fact.
  21. Carina Says:
Why does there always have to be a war over megadeth and metallica , both bands are great and if you think otherwise who cares, jesus christ
  22. Barwolf Says:
all hail !!!! clifford lee burton r.i.p.
  23. Nicolle Says:
100% Correct, Dave did not write ne thing on Master, He wrote The Intro to Ktulu (Kirk Wrote The Lead, i can prove it with the demo tape when it was called When Hell Freezes Over) and the Lead for Ride, thats it. James is the Riff mastermind behind most of metallicas Tracks. And to prove when mustaine was in the band they werent at their best. What is metallica's best album? Master of Puppets. and was Dave involved at all with anything on that album? FUCK NO!! Cercopithecus47 is 100 % correct
  24. Barwolf Says:
yea they mess up on studio version dumbfuck
  25. HAKEM Says:
the reason its spelled differently on the album is because if you say or spell the name right it was said to have summoned the demon
