January 8th, 2009 at 02:07:47 kadleckyle, It's the line about "their home in the sky..." It was widely known back when this song came out that that was a put-down of religious belief. It always wrecked what is an otherwise beautiful song for me -- even when I was an atheist! For the record: most people who call themselves "Christian" are lying blasphemers and I oppose them. The Old Order Amish are probably the only true Christians. I get sick of all the putdowns of belief; didn't mean to stir up all the atheists.
January 8th, 2009 at 02:30:46 ive been pretty much the only one making sencible arguments and you have yet to answer my question. im genuinly curious because i cant figure it out, what part of this song is against god? and my not beliveing there is a god has nothing to do with making myself feel more powerful or special, its only because i belive there is nothing that cannot be explained by science, i have seen no proof of a god.
January 8th, 2009 at 02:53:45 Wow. Another ad hominem attack. You geniuses explain a lot of why the world is in the shape it's in. Thanks for taking the time to argue a point rationally, notafraidofbeingstupid. You really think that YOUR comment was humble?!? Oh yeah, I forgot -- you do. When you don't believe in God, then YOU get to be a god. How wonderful for you. Anyone who wishes to discuss a point calmly is welcome to do so; the rest of you will hereafter be totally ignored. Say "goodnight," kiddies.
January 8th, 2009 at 03:16:44 You are Soooo much smarter than the rest of us. Look up arrogant in the dictionary and you'll see your picture. Wow you are so much more special than me...
January 8th, 2009 at 03:39:43 Do any of you people know that this was a lullaby he wrote for his nephew James. It is no deeper than that, just a lullaby.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:02:42 Simple music for simple minded people. LOL. LONG LIVE IGNORANT SHEEP...
January 8th, 2009 at 04:25:41 ... what about those who crash planes into buildings for there religion? my point is that sure every-single group of people is going to have its extremeists but you cant just generalize all by the few extreme belivers.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:48:40 also i guess you would call me an atheist, i do not belive in god. not that im super against him, i just am someone who needs a little sign of him i guess. i truly hope that when i die i find im wrong. i say this because u obviously do not respect those who do not belive in god, you say that some of us act like geniuses and all else are idiots, this is true. but what about those who pickette and say all "fags" are going to hell?...
January 8th, 2009 at 05:11:39 how is he insulting your beliefs? what lines of this song say that people who believe in god are idiots. i cant find a single line where he insults god or those who belive in him. i just cant believe your calling james taylor disrespectful and bad talking him so much, if you dont like his music fine everyone is titled to there opinion. but he is as a person regarded as one of the kindest most gracious people
January 8th, 2009 at 05:34:38 Dang, jt42, what a brilliant rebuttal! How cogent! Thanks for demonstrating the mental calibre of those holding opposing views to mine. FYI, jt, I don't do drugs -- unlike the noble James Taylor, who is a big fan of heroin and other injected poisons. If you ever learn to use a dictionary, look up the expression "ad hominem", btw. It's in the section under "stupid debating tricks". Now run along and play.
January 8th, 2009 at 05:57:37 what are you smokin? cos i'd like to know what's making you talk such BS...
January 8th, 2009 at 06:20:36 I say it's a shame because "his feelings" that he is "just expressing" are to insult others' beliefs. If the song were to belittle atheists, it would be gratuitously insulting to THEM, wouldn't it? Like Lennon's "Imagine", the arrogant conceit of it distracts from what would otherwise be a pretty song. Some atheists think that they are geniuses and everyone else is an idiot. Well James Taylor is the one who can't respect others. Just expressing MY feelings.
January 8th, 2009 at 06:43:35 why is it a shame, like you said it is beautiful and he is just expressing his feelings, just sit back and listen to the beautiful music. i just do not understand why some people think all others are wrong and shameful if they do not believe the exact same things. the world would be such a great place if all could just respect each others thoughts.
January 8th, 2009 at 07:06:34 Although the lyrics are gratuitously anti-religion, which is a shame, it's a very pretty song. For a smack-head, he was a great singer/songwriter.
January 8th, 2009 at 07:29:33 fantastic thank you
January 8th, 2009 at 07:52:32 One of the most beautiful songs ever written or sung. A favorite of my dearest friend in the wrold; I've forwarded this video which I'm sure she's seen. All the same, I send it with love and fond memories; of times long ago, so close to our hearts.
January 8th, 2009 at 08:15:31 Thanks JT. You still have one of the most beautiful singing voices in the business, not to mention that you are a creative and thoughtful songwriter.
January 8th, 2009 at 08:38:30 Thanks for sharing this. This was the song my ex used to sing to our kids at bedtime. Pleasant memory.
January 8th, 2009 at 09:01:29 great song i so rememer the times and trying to find it on the raido sitting in the parking lot after the high school football game. thank you for the post Earl
January 8th, 2009 at 09:24:28 This was back when he could open his jaw when he sings :)
January 8th, 2009 at 09:47:27 I can agree with you on that lol. Im 17, and my dad used to listen to James Taylor all the time, and only now once he's gone, have I began to listen to him. Sad though, because it brings back memories lol. regardless, he's awesome.
January 8th, 2009 at 10:10:26 however, not his voice, or talent.
January 8th, 2009 at 10:33:25 my dad danced with me when i was little to this song every sunday. and i would get a pretty dress on and step on the top of my dad's feet and he would do the dance.
January 8th, 2009 at 10:56:24 My dad used to sing this song to me when i was little to get me to go sleep. (My names James) haha.
