NHL 09: Developer Commentary MMO Mode part 1

PS3,Xbox 360 Release Date: September 9, 2008 Playing sports games online has always been the same deal: one-on-one, each player controls all of the players on their given team. EA Sports, specifically its Vancouver branch, is changing that classic paradigm by delivering what they're calling sports gaming's first Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) mode, branded as EA Sports Hockey League in NHL 09. And no, you won't be leveling up your tree elf or designing the interior of your player's apartment. Hockey League takes the popular acronym and simplifies it to fit within the framework of a sports game. Using a similar camera angle as we've seen from the Superstar and Captain Your Country modes of other EA Sports properties, players control only one player on the ice. Your five teammates are controlled by other players located around the globe, making for the first true six-on-six hockey experience. I recently got the chance to visit the massive Vancouver campus and was given the keys to an early build of EA Sports Hockey League and a group of willing participants from the EA development team. The result was some of the best hockey action this side of NHL '94. The Hockey League is all about creating your own unique player and building their cred online by performing well in your selected role. Immediately upon booting up NHL 09 players will be told to create a player. The initial setup won't be as deep as what's offered later in Be A Pro mode, but it will get the basic height, weight and hair color out of the way. My customized player had already been setup for me, complete with blond hair and all. For those starting from scratch, the next step would be picking a public team to join. To expedite the process I was already placed on the EA Canada team, along with five other players. Oh, and don't worry if you can't form an even team of six as the game only requires three human players per team. The rest can be controlled by the AI. Assigning positions to our team seemed to be a bit of a free-for-all thanks to a "first-come, first-served" approach. The list of positions is presented and then players need only hit A (X on PS3) on their personal favorite to select it. There doesn't seem to be a system in place for the GM to override anyone's decision. Luckily I was able to nab the right wing spot before anyone else could jump on it. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/897/897903p1.html

FF7 MMO Challenge: Jenova*DEATH (Part 1 of 2)

Please read the Playlist description for the challenge rules and FAQs. NOTE: The video playback speed in this video and part 2 is 2.75x normal speed; this so I wouldn't have to spread the footage over more than two videos (since the whole battle took well over 40 minutes - *AGAIN*). Demon's Gate and Schizo left my Turbo Ether supply in a sad state, so I had to hit up some Killbins in this area to restock. Convincing the Gremlins to hit Cloud and Cid with Sadness took even *more* time than stealing Turbo Ethers. I didn't think that was possible. To retain Sadness for Tifa (who still had it left over from the battle with Jenova*LIFE), you need to switch in Tifa for Cait Sith before she can force herself into the party. If she does that, an automatic heal will mess up your hairstyle. So, Jenova*DEATH. 25,000 HP, a decent 320 MDf, and a colossal 800 MP. Her attack pattern, much like the preceeding Jenovas, it both simple and completely unpredictable: she can use Red Light once to thrice per turn, against either random or all targets. With Sadness, Tifa and Cid can survive one Red Light while Cloud can't (the shock, the horror); with Sadness and MBarrier, Tifa and Cid can survive two Red Lights while Cloud can take one. Jenova*DEATH can also use Silence, which has a 60% chance to stick. If it does, you need to remove it with Esuna; Silence costs 30 MP to cast, and since she will only use it if none of your characters have Silence it's a good way to drain her MP more quickly. As per usual, Esuna also removes Sadness, so just pray that the bulk of the Silences miss. If Cloud's Sadness is gone, you can basically write him off (as you can see in the video); for Tifa and Cid, it hardly matters either way. In sharp contrast to the previous battle, this one is so simple it's boring. Using the Slow on Jenova*DEATH and Haste on your party gives you so many extra turns that it's not even funny anymore. There's virtually no risk involved, so all you have to do is kick back and wait for her to deplete her own MP before Quake2'ing her to death. With an average damage of 257, that's going to take you a lovely 98 Quake2's. Note that I screwed up horribly at the end of the first video: I messed up depleting my MBarrier and as a result Cid got KO'ed. I was *really* lucky that Jenova*DEATH's last Silence missed. Part 1 deals with Jenova*DEATH running out of MP; part 2 handles killing her. Cloud: Level 15 - Rune Blade, Rune Armlet: Barrier, Earth, Heal, Restore, Time Tifa: Level 25 - Platinum Fist, Rune Armlet: Barrier, Earth, Heal, Restore, Time Cid: Level 24 - Viper Halberd, Rune Armlet: Barrier, Earth, Heal, Restore, Time

FF7 MMO Challenge: "Broken" Schizo (Part 2 of 2)

Please read the Playlist description for the challenge rules and FAQs. NOTE: The video playback speed in this video is 2.5x normal speed, and 1.5x normal for part 2; this so I wouldn't have to spread the footage over more than two videos (since the whole battle took well over 40 minutes - *again*). "Broken" Schizo? Well, yes. The battle you see in this video is not how Schizo battles normally play out. In this battle, Schizo(Left) - the ice head - lags behind, meaning the attack pattern changes. I'm fairly certain this can be contributed to Cid getting a Limit Break and acting immediately in combination with early Haste, but it's not really important in any case. I should note that disrupting AI is usually nothing special; what makes it noteworthy in this particular case is the fact that Schizo easily has more than double your Dexterity. Effectively, this leads to the "easy" version of Schizo, where easy should really be taken with a grain of sand. I'll see if I can upload the "hard" version somewhere down the line. Schizo's attack pattern looks like this: Step 1: Fire Breath, Ice Breath Step 2: Fire Breath, Ice Breath Step 3: Fire Breath, Ice Breath Step 4: Nothing, Nothing Step 5: Nothing, Nothing Step 6: Double Breath, Double Breath And repeat. The lagging of the left head is especially important for Step 6: instead of two double breaths back-to-back, it's now double/single/double breath. This makes it a whole lot harder for Schizo to KO a character after the MBarriers are up. Otherwise, the battle is a lot like its harder counterpart. Given that the heads have 350 MP each, and that each attack costs 10 MP to use, you'll see Steps 1 to 6 eight times followed by Steps 1 to 3 once. Without MBarrier, Cait Sith and Cid can survive one single and no double breaths; with MBarrier, they can survive two single breaths and one double breath. Cloud is a wuss, and can't survive anything. That's what you get for being the party leader. The general strategy for the regular battle is as follows: 1. Haste Cait Sith and Cid before Step 4. 2. Put up MBarriers for Cait Sith and Cid during Step 4. 3. Restore Cait Sith and Cid's HP to full during Step 5. 4. Recover MP during the next Steps 1 to 3. 5. Make sure MBarriers have run out before the next Step 4. 6. Loop back to 2 and repeat until Schizo's MP has run out. Of course, you'll need to heal frequently; in most cases, the only way to stay alive is to heal in between attacks. This is hard to explain, and takes some practice to master. I'll likely cover it in more depth when I upload the hard version. In this battle, the above strategy obviously doesn't work. As such, what I'm doing is pretty much completely improvised; this might be the easy version, but that's gotta score me some style points at least. The first video deals with staying alive until Schizo runs out of MP; the second video handles killing it. Cloud: Level 15 - Rune Blade, Rune Armlet: Lightning, Time Cait Sith: Level 24 - Black M-Phone, Rune Armlet: Barrier, Lightning, Restore, Revive Cid: Level 24 - Viper Halberd, Rune Armlet: Barrier, Lightning, Restore, Time
