2008 SEMA: Dodge Challenger Convertible

Now in final preparations for its official debut at the upcoming 2008 SEMA Show, the Coach Builders Dodge Challenger convertible will be shown alongside the company's Chrysler 300C and Cadillac CTS convertible conversions. Coach Builders' Larry Moran told Inside Line that production of the Challenger convertible will begin on November 15, and that the company is "already taking deposits for getting a place in line." The Challenger convertible conversion is priced at $16,000, Moran said. A 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 currently costs $41,695 including shipping charges and gas-guzzler tax, so expect to pay nearly $58,000 for open-air Challenger motoring. Moran also says that "custom interiors, performance options and wheels and tires" will be offered, but the details "are not firmed up yet." The car that will debut at SEMA was fortified with a Vortech supercharger that bumps the 6.1-liter Hemi V8 to 560 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. It rides slightly lower on a KW coil-over suspension kit and 22-inch Foose Challenger wheels wrapped in Nitto tires. The convertible conversion reinforces the Challenger with strut bars hidden inside the trunk instead of a visible roll bar, and the acrylic polyester cloth hydraulic top is padded between the structure and the exterior fabric for sound and temperature insulation. A heated glass rear window and matching fabric headliner are also included.

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Unleashed @ 2008 SEMA

Designed for hard-core off-road use, the F-150 SVT Raptor gets a long list of suspension upgrades along with unique bodywork and an optional 6.2-liter V8 engine. The Raptor is the first application of the new 6.2-liter V8 and although its specifications haven't been finalized, Ford officials said to expect around 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. A 5.4-liter 3-valve V8 is the standard engine. Both engines are backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. All Raptors will come standard with four-wheel drive and a locking rear differential. Suspension upgrades include new upper and lower A-arms up front, retuned leaf springs in back and a set of race-quality Fox Racing Shox that combine to allow up to 11.2 inches of travel up front and 13.4 inches in back. The track is 7 inches wider than a standard F-150, so the Raptor also gets wider front and rear fenders along with longer half-shafts and a revised tie rod to maintain proper suspension geometry. The standard 17-inch wheels are cast aluminum while the specially designed BFGoodrich tires measure 315/70R17. The interior features bucket seats with additional side bolstering, metallic door trim, a unique SVT instrument panel and a set of console-mounted auxiliary switches for owner-installed accessories. Ford officials said they expect to begin production of the F-150 SVT Raptor in the summer of 2009.

It's headed for the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas next month. The Venza SportLux was envisioned as a potential factory tuner model, with an aero body kit, interior modifications and additional performance hardware. Exterior add-ons include a six-piece lip spoiler, a rear hatch spoiler, a custom grille and an integrated hood scoop. The SportLux rides on 24-inch Toyo Proxes 4 performance tires mounted on Chrome Cognac No. 20 wheels. Chassis enhancements include TRD brakes with forged calipers as well as a height-adjustable coil-over tuned suspension. Street Image has fitted a TRD supercharger, high-pressure radiator cap and oil filler cap, as well as a cold-air intake system, heavy-duty battery and dual center-exit stainless steel exhaust system. Seats are upholstered in black and burgundy leather, with black suede accents. The Eclipse in-vehicle entertainment system includes 1,000- and 1,500-watt amplifiers and an in-dash navigation unit.

The concept will be on display at the 2008 SEMA Show. The GS concept was developed by North Carolina-based Riley Technologies, working with GM's Performance Vehicle Operations. Riley already is developing a similar GS-class racing car for the 2009 Grand Am Koni Challenge series. The SEMA car boasts a reinforced chassis and a race-ready suspension, with a production LS3 V8 and a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox. Riley adds a C&R racing radiator, upgraded oil, trans and differential coolers and a 3-inch exhaust system with Coast Fab mufflers. To keep track weight down, the 2010 Camaro gets a carbon fiber hood, deck lid, doors and fenders. The Donohue-inspired deep-blue paint scheme is accented with yellow graphics, yellow racing wheels and a yellow cockpit.

Hurst Hemi Challenger @ 2008 SEMA

The tuner says it takes a Dodge Challenger SRT8 and beefs it up to 500-plus horses. Hurst said the Hurst/Hemi Challenger will be available in four trim levels through participating Dodge dealers. Details include five-spoke Hurst alloy wheels and a classic pistol-grip Hurst shifter. Pricing has not yet been announced for the four trim levels. But Hurst spokesman Ron Flint said the special model will add a minimum $10,000 premium to the Challenger. "We are targeting a range of $10,000-$20,000 MSRP above the cost of the vehicles for Stages 1 through 3," he said in an e-mail to Inside Line. "Stage 4 will come later and is a built-to-order model that can range much higher depending on special options like special paint colors."

2008 SEMA: Hyundai Genesis Black Camo Coup

The Genesis coupe was tuned by Street Concepts and will make its sizzling 2008 SEMA Show debut on November 4. Hyundai confirmed in a statement that it will show off three modified Genesis Coupes at the upcoming SEMA show. This latest version underscores the Korean automaker's commitment to beefing up its performance-car credibility. In early September, Hyundai said HKS USA will create a Genesis Coupe 2.0t for SEMA. Hyundai says the camo-swathed iteration of the Genesis Coupe was inspired by the stealth fighter jet. The package also features a custom grille design, Volk 19-inch racing wheels, performance tires, a modified suspension and Brembo brakes. The 3.8-liter V6 engine, with an estimated 306 horsepower, has been tweaked with a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and a cold air intake system. Interior touches include carbon-fiber dashboard trim, a custom Infinity audio system, Cobra seats and black suede accents. Earlier, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe was expected to be delivered to dealers in early February. But in Wednesday's press release about the Street Concepts Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the automaker said the "production model arrives in spring of 2009." The horsepower numbers on the Genesis Coupe also appear to have been readjusted. Hyundai previously said the V6 engine would deliver 310 horsepower and that the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine would deliver 223 hp. In its latest missive, it says the four-cylinder will deliver 210 hp.

SEMA 2008: Spyker C8 Laviolette

Scooter Bingham, owner of Car Nutz Customs in Bellevue, Washington, unveiled its modded Spyker C8 Laviolette. Limited to only about 50 in the country right now, Car Nutzs creation is actually rare in that it has removable glass roofs on it and is the only one in the world that has that. They also went a step further and added a bangin custom sound system and interior, featuring black suede accents with red stitching. It even features a matching baby seat for Scooters son.
