MALCOLM X: OUR HISTORY WAS DESTROYED BY SLAVERY

http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/ Malcolm X appears on a television show in Chicago called "City Desk" on March 17, 1963. "My father didn't know his last name. My father got his last name from his grandfather and his grandfather got it from his grandfather who got it from the slavemaster. The real names of our people were destroyed during slavery. The last name of my forefathers was taken from them when they were brought to America and made slaves, and then the name of the slavemaster was given, which we refuse, we reject that name today and refuse it. I never acknowledge it whatsoever." http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/

Poverty in Haiti spawns child slavery 13 October 2008

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and the poverty has fuelled restavek, a system of domestic servitude of hundreds of thousands of children that is tantamount to modern-day slavery. The country's government acknowledges that child slaves exist but says it is part of the culture. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports.

Milton Friedman on Slavery and Colonization

This clip is from the 15-part lecture series, "Milton Friedman Speaks" http://www.ideachannel.com/product_info.php?products_id=1137 Transcript available via FreedomChannel: http://freedomchannel.blogspot.com/2007/12/milton-friedman-on-slavery.html Summary: A student poses a question to Milton Friedman in which he asks for an appraisal of just how exactly the riches that now exist in the so called "capitalist democracies" were obtained and how those countries became so rich so quick. Specifically he asks Friedman to account for the effect that having free labor derived from slavery allowed them to enrich themselves, and how the possession of colonies allowed rich countries to bleed wealth out of their colonial domains. Friedman responds by claiming it's simply untrue that the wealth that arose in Western countries was due to slavery. Slavery was a disgrace and a blot on the United States' record, but many rich Western nations did not have slavery. Britain and Japan did not have slaves when they developed and Hong Kong does not have slaves today. He goes onto claim that the facts are against the notion that the wealth was created due to the West exploiting its colonies. The reason people are quick to think so is that they have an ingrained predisposition to see view the world as a zero-sum game where if one man gains the other man looses. In reality a free market allows everyone to gain through mutually beneficial voluntary transactions. When the West colonized Africa they brought with them technology that greatly improved the condition of the people that lived there and actually made them better off. The wheel for example had not even been invented in Africa in the 19th century. As a result of Africa's contacts with the West their condition improved greatly from what it previously was. To the charge that colonizers bleed wealth from their colonies, Friedman notes that it has always cost the mother country more to maintain its colonies then what was ever received in direct or indirect economic benefit. In the famous case of India, conclusive studies have shown that it cost Britain far more to maintain India then if it had never had it. Furthermore, many Western nations never possessed colonies yet became wealthy despite that fact. Chocolate and Slavery

This was my final presentation for my Comparitive Ethnic Studies Class taught by David Leonard at Washington State University. David is a very good teacher and the class showed the relations within food and race. We talked about slavery in cocoa, coffee, and banana industries. Also about how media shows food and its ads and how it is directly reflected in racism such as the mammy figure of Aunt Jamima. The video is about chocolate and the slavery that goes hand-in-hand with it. I hope you enjoy and thank you for all the comments on this video. Go Cougs!

ELDER ABUSE OR SLAVERY

* Murray Feingold NY ELDER ABUSE OR SLAVERY Murray Feingold is old enough to retire. He has been a Postal worker for over forty years. He holds a full time position, in addition to working extensive overtime. Murray was happy for all those years until he was introduced to the judicial system in 2000. The landlord of the building he had been living in for the prior ten years refused to make what Murray considered necessary repairs, so Murray resorted to 'self help' and withheld a portion of the rent. The apartment that Murray was living in was rent controlled, so it is easy to understand why the landlord decided to start eviction proceedings. Instead of eviction, Murray was placed under guardianship by Hon. Anthony Cutrona Justice of the Supreme Court in Kings County, Brooklyn, NY in March of 2001 in order to protect him. This is when Murray says his life turned into a nightmare. When a guardian is appointed for a person, all their civil rights are lost. Murray could no longer control his own money. The court ordered that all of Murray's salary, including all overtime pay must be sent to the guardian, a company ironically called Self Help Community Services, Inc. Each week, the guardian returns $325 which he and his wife are expected to live on. A recent copy of payments made by the guardian on behalf of Murray were impossible to decipher. Many of Murray's over due bills to places like cable and cell phone companies, as well as one credit card bill, were in arrears. Some were accumulating interest almost equaling the minimum amounts being paid by the guardian. There was no indication of the amount of fees taken out by the guardianship company as compensation for their services. For the forty years prior to having a guardian, Murray claims, he had no problems paying all his bills, including car payments. What I found most troubling when I met Murray was that his most essential needs were not being met.  He was in dire need of dental work. He was missing a few of his bottom teeth. He spoke fast and loud and kept asking me to repeat myself. I questioned him about these matters and I was shocked at his answer. He told me that he had been having dental work done but when the bill became five hundred dollars, the guardian would no longer pay it. He was more concerned with his loss of hearing which is having a negative effect at his job. He says that his supervisor and co-workers find it annoying because they have to constantly repeat instructions because Murray can't hear them when they speak. Sometimes people mistake his loudness for aggressiveness. According to Murray, he had a hearing test done last week and he is totally deaf in his right ear and partially deaf in his left. He said that he had ordered three hearing aids from a company called hearing aid express using a personal check, but the guardian cancelled them. It is hard to believe that a guardian of a person would not immediately address the issues which are negatively effecting the health and well-being of someone under their watch but NASGA, the National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse reports that this is an ever growing problem because there is a lack of accountability in guardianship courts. Murray has made his problem known to many agencies in New York, has contacted and emailed many New York state agencies, the first lady, Oprah Winfrey, etc. and has been told that they can not help him. Murray says he has written to Judge Cutrona asking for a hearing in order to get rid of this guardianship so often that recently the Judge wrote back accusing Murray of harassing him. Question. Why doesn't Murray just retire and quit his job? Answer: The guardian will continue to get and control his pension. Being a victim of a guardianship is like being caught in quicksand. You don't realize what you have gotten yourself into, and it is near impossible to get out. Murray's case is not an isolated one. Every day in every state across the country, guardians and conservators are being appointed, sometimes unnecessarily and greedy, corrupt individuals are lining their pockets with assets that should go to the care of the elderly person. Please join us in stopping guardianship abuse. (NASGA) is a civil and human rights organization formed by victims of forced and/or abusive guardianships and conservatorships. Our purpose is to protect Wards and their families - both physically and financially through education, outreach, and advocacy. Our goal is to assure that the law is not being misused to advantage special interests. http://www.stopguardianabuse.org

Bound By Promises: Contemporary Slavery in Rural Brazil

Every year, more than 25,000 workers are enslaved by landowners in rural Brazil, mostly in the Amazon region. This video tells the story of men who set out in search of work and are taken to isolated ranches, only to find that they have been lured into debt bondage. Forced to do backbreaking work and to live in overcrowded shacks with no running water, they are treated like animals. "A bullet from my shotgun is what you have a right to here", one worker was told. With no way out, they toil in the hope of buying back their freedom. Cambodia: CHILD SEX SLAVERY (1of2) [EN&KH]

When Dalyn was only 12 years old, she was tricked and forced into prostitution. Locked in a cage with others underneath the brothel, she was starved, beaten and threatened at gun point until she agreed to service clients. International Amnesty should take a look at police chief Hok Lundy and his police thugs. It is shameful that Cambodia has to bare the face for selling young girls while Vietnamese are running the brothels. The issue of trafficking of women and children receives increased attention in the public and the mass media. Confronted with the complexity of the problem and under the shock of sometimes cruel individual stories of victims, one is tempted to concentrate almost exclusively on the criminal aspects of the trade and on the issue of rescuing victims. Many of Yuon girls always sell their beautiful bodies to foreigners to raise their families who are still living in both Cambodia and Vietnam in miserable poverty. In Srok Yuon, it's hard for them to do this dirty business, for there is no freedom at all, is being run wickedly by its Yuon leaders who are the worst murderous violators of human rights on earth. TRAFFICKING IN VIRGINS According to the report on sexual exploitation and trafficking in Cambodia, child prostitutes (under 18 years old) constitute about 15.5 percent of the total number of prostitutes in Cambodia. In the youngest age group, that is from 9 to 15 years old, about three-quarters were reported to be Vietnamese. Although we did not encounter cases of girls under 13 years old in this survey, child prostitution is definitely part of the commercial sex business in Cambodia. The very young girls are worth a lot of money as virgins. Deflowering a young girl is, among some (especially Chinese) groups, believed to have a rejuvenating effect on men. The word used in this context is derived from the Vietnamese word 'khui'. Literally, khui means to open a bottle, to uncork or to make a hole. The term khui is also used figuratively to describe having sex with a girl or woman who is still a virgin. Some men even use the term in the meaning of having sex with a woman, without especially referring to her virgin or non-virgin status. However, women or girls who have had sex already are worth a lot less in the sex business. The first time they can receive $200 to $1,000, depending on the age and beauty of the girl. The second time, she is worth already a lot less, after which her 'value' diminishes even further. These girls or women are so-called khui haey or kouc haey [deflowered already] and therefore have lost their special 'value'. The idea prevails that especially Vietnamese girls are sold to be khui-ed, as a meebon in Svay Rieng commented: "The Vietnamese people don't mind about virginity. They don't care about their daughter losing virginity. They are glad that their daughter can earn much money..." For the very young girls, being forced to be khui-ed is often a traumatic experience. They usually do not know what awaits them. A Vietnamese girl, who lived with her mother next to Svay Pak, was brought to a brothel when she was 14 years old. She remembers: "My mother sold me for the first khui for $500. I did not know what to do, but she told me I had to stay in that place for four to ten days and that she would bring me back home afterwards. Then the meebon ordered me to sleep with a guest. I hurt so much. I cried, I had heavy bleedings. I was so afraid." The bleeding after deflowering is an important sign of virginity of the girl for the meebon and especially the client. In some cases, the meebon will have a doctor do a check-up in order to see whether a new-brought girl is still a virgin. A Vietnamese girl who was 15 years old when she was brought to a brothel was checked by a doctor and declared not to be a virgin. This was not because she had had sex before, but according to the doctor, possibly because she rode a bicycle. Therefore, the meebon put the girl among the "ordinary place" and not among the virgins. A client, who agrees with the meebon to pay a high price for deflowering a virgin girl, expects the virgin girl to bleed. If not, the client will refuse paying anything at all. A 16-year-old Cambodian-born Vietnamese girl interviewed in a shelter recounted how she 'devaluated' after the meebon found out that she was not khui: "At that time we were very poor. Everyone looked down on us, even my sister. My mother told me to try to earn money, so that we did not need to be ashamed with our neighbours who had a lot of jewelry. My mother didn't know that I was deflowered with my boyfriend. She thought that I was a virgin. She talked with a meebon to bring me to khui... They didn't know that I was khui haey. But after sleeping for the first time with a customer, I did not bleed. After this the meebon gave my mother only $50 to take back home."

Capitalism is Slavery

http://bootme21.blogspot.com "Even a woman is good and so is a slave, although it may be said that a woman is an inferior thing and a slave beneath consideration." -Aristotle Capitalism is Slavery I used to think that the key to freedom was private property and capitalism was the economic system that fell in-line with that idea. But, capitalism must maintain a class of owners and a class of the owned, or workers. The class of owners are not workers, they can use workers like a resource, and they do. The foundation of "civilization" was, and is, slavery. It was present in the first civilizations and is even condoned and endorsed by the Bible, the most widely accepted religious text... The society in which we live is widely considered a "free society," and private property is the foundation of that "freedom." In order for this system to be maintained there must be an owning, or ruling, class. And, conversely, there must be an owned, working, or slave class. Why would a slave owner want to own slaves when it is far cheaper and more economical for a slave owner to allow his slaves to believe they are "freemen" who must "make their own way" inside of his system? The only thing that has substantially changed throughout history in the social structure is that now the slaves think they are free. Most cannot see the chains holding them in bondage, or feel the whip cracking on their back, so they experience an illusory state of "freedom." So much do they hold this idea, that they will fight to maintain the system that enslaves them. Even the most aware and "awake" individuals seem to still be clinging intellectually to the system that enslaves them, not looking deeply enough to see that they are supporting that system with idealistic hubris. In closing, capitalism is based on property and ownership, which invariably lead to slavery. Whether "voluntary" or involuntary, the capitalist system cannot exist without a class of rulers and a class of the ruled. Stop clinging to what your culture tells you is the only way. The is no "one right way" for all people to live. And any idea that maintains that it's the only way is definitely going to be tyrannical to those upon whom it is imposed. Even though today it is still denied, history of the Church's involvement in slavery is well documented. These sample clips from 'Goodbye Uncle Tom' serve as an example that Christianity was the #1 reason for the savage treatment towards Black Africans.

The Slavery of Seeking the Praise of Men (Paul Washer)

You shall not covet your neighbor's house, you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor any thing that is your neighbor's. (Exo 20:17) Take heed that you give not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise you have no reward of your Father who is in heaven. Therefore when you give your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does: That your alms may be in secret: and your Father who sees in secret himself shall reward you openly. And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly. But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not therefore like them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. (Mat 6:1-8) Then spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not according to their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But you be not called Rabbi: for one is your Teacher, even Christ; and all you are brothers. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, who is in heaven. Neither be you called masters: for one is your Teacher, even Christ. (Mat 23:1-10) (Paul Washer)

Modern Day Slavery: Racism and the Drug War

Slavery is defined as the act of keeping a person as a piece of property. If you ask the average American if slavery still exists in America, their answer is likely to be no. After watching this video, many will change their minds. As the crack epidemic flooded inner cities across the country, in 1986 Reagan's "Anti-Drug Abuse Act" makes the penalty for crack possession a hundred times harsher than that of powder cocaine. The following year new legislation is passed allowing private corporations to own and operate prisons. Twenty years later over a million non-violent drug offenders are imprisoned while corporate stocks are traded based on how many prisoners are in the cages. A report released in 2008 by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London states that the United States has the highest incarceration rate and most people behind bars per capita in the world. Over 50% of these people are imprisoned for drug crimes. At the same time, prescription drug companies account for over 50% of Fortune 500 profits. All illegal drugs combined kill approx 11K per year while cigarettes, alcohol and pharmaceutical kill almost a million. What's wrong with this picture?
